INSTITUTIONAL INFORMATION:

Institutional/Departmental Overview
The Gladys Marcus Library supports the academic needs of undergraduate and graduate students. The Library provides a well-selected collection of more than 300,000 volumes of print, non-print, and electronic materials to support the instructional programs in art and design, business and technology, and the liberal arts. The collection also includes specialized electronic and digital resources and materials not often found in conventional academic libraries such as the fashion and trend forecasting services, sketch collections, clipping files, and fashion show DVDs. The Library’s collection of newspapers and periodicals includes over 500 current subscriptions and extensive back issue runs and specializes in international design periodicals and trade publications. The Digital Library, with databases provided by FIT, SUNYConnect, and the New York State Library, provides access to thousands of full-text journal articles, books, images, research reports and other resources; most are available remotely and twenty-four hours a day.

Special areas and projects include: the Special Collections with scrapbooks, archives, illustrations, and other primary research material in their original formats; the Interior Design Resource Center, a professional-level product literature collection; and the FIT Digital Image Library (FITDIL), a database of approximately 11,000 digital images.

COLLECTION INFORMATION:

General Descripton of Artist Files Collection
The Designer Files, maintained by the Periodicals Department of the Gladys Marcus Library at FIT, are vertical clippings files documenting over 600 twentieth-century fashion designers and design firms, with new files regularly added for emerging designers. Consisting primarily of ephemera and “gray literature” that exist outside normal library cataloging circuits, the Designer Files preserve and index primary source material useful to both makers and historians, and unavailable or inaccessible in other library collections. Items in the Designer Files date from the 1920s to the present.

Present or future digitization plans or activities:

Plans
The FIT Digital Library (FITDIL) is an Internet-based digital repository database of approximately 23,000 digital images intended for both research and instructional use by FIT students and faculty. The Library participated in a pilot project and digitized 133 items from the Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel folders, which were cataloged according a metadata structure based on existing digital collections at FIT and aligned with national standards established by the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative and the Visual Resources Association.

Plans for future digitization projects include establishing staff workflow procedures for scanning and metadata entry beyond the pilot project period.
