The National Gallery of Canada Library and Archives serves the Gallery’s mandate to undertake research, promote knowledge and understanding, and disseminate information about Gallery collections and art in general. The collections are the most extensive in Canada on the visual arts, and constitute the national research collection in the field. Services are provided to the Gallery's curatorial, education, conservation, and library staff; to the Research Fellows; to the national and international scholarly communities; and to museum professionals, students, artists, journalists, collectors, dealers and the general public.
The Documentation collection includes 44,000 files on Canadian artists and 19,000 files on non-Canadian artists. Files are also held on the National Gallery of Canada, Canadian art schools, galleries, and societies, and Canadian and non-Canadian museums, collectors, curators, art historians, art administrators, and trustees.
